No-Heat Checklist
Before You Call for Service
If your home is without heat, expert help from Mel & Sons is as near as your phone. Before calling, this simple checklist may help you restore heat faster and avoid unnecessary discomfort.

Quick Heating System Checklist
- Check the thermostat Set the thermostat at least ten degrees above the current room temperature.
- Check burner switches Make sure all burner switches are in the “on” position. There is usually one near the burner and another near the top of the basement stairs.
- Check the fuse box Replace any blown fuses or reset tripped breakers. If it happens again, call Mel & Sons for service.
- Check your oil tank gauge Make sure you have fuel in the tank, especially if you are not enrolled in automatic delivery.
- Press the reset button once only Press the reset button one time. It may be located on the relay, in the smoke pipe, or on the burner motor.
- Check steam boiler water level If you have a steam boiler, make sure the water is showing at least halfway up in the gauge.
- Flush the low water cut-off The low water cut-off should be flushed regularly and the boiler refilled to the proper level.
- Ask for guidance If you are unsure how to operate your heating system, have a Mel & Sons serviceman walk you through it.
